Lilacs & Lemons

Had a bouquet of lilacs on the table
the first time you visited.
Had lemons in a kitchen bowl.
You made lemonade; served it
in flutes. We shared ordinary meals
on my good china; celebrated
our holidays on Sundays,
sometimes till Thursday.

Lilacs don't bloom long,
lemonade is bittersweet,
I loved your balance.
Lilacs and lemonade,
a wilted bouquet and
cloudy drink, pleasures
enjoyed for a season.

Love that. Reads like song lyrics--and tells a whole story

How lovely and sad too. We need to feel gratitude for what we have, when we have it. Thanks.

but the pleasure has lingered... what a beautiful way of expressing it....

lilacs are so amazing. and so brief. it makes me sad for them. for myself, actually, when i've enjoyed them selfishly. i like how you've used them here and i see color in this piece: the purple and the yellow. it makes the piece exciting!

p.s. did you ever tell us about your name and pseudonym? how did the pseudonym come about? what's the L. stand for? i love details. (that's a nice way of saying i'm nosey)

I really like the imagery of sweet to sour, fancy to plain. Thanks for sharing this poem

Hey, thanks for the amazing poem and the personal history. I mean big thanks.

I am pleased to meet you! And kudos for what you do with and for those girls. That rocks.

I'll do the same, telling, soon. But not this weekend. My husband's party (for his 60th) is tonight and he has a few family members coming in today for a few days. Bad day to wake up at 3AM with insomnia.

I love the balance you created in the poem - the bitter and the sweet, each one temporal in our lives.

Beautiful.

Susan,

I enjoyed reading this poem. I like how you mixed lilacs and lemons in this, to me they seem pleasures of different seasons but work well together here.
