I wanted to raise the voice of a lot of the people that I knew growing up, and this was, for the most part, poor people who had extraordinary dreams but also very amazing obstacles. ~Edwidge Danticat
I enjoyed this quote, but I really liked the one by Nikki Giovanni, too. Did she use it in a poem? Just wondering, it gives me a writing idea...Thanks!
EH, You haven't read Ms. Danticat? I highly recommend The Farming of Bones. I've read it twice and each read was wonderful. It is reminiscent of Their Eyes Were Watching God and more. Her writing is poetic, lush, hauntingly beautiful.

Hi Melissa, I've had this quote in my box of quotes for years. I can't remember where I came across it but I do not remember it from a poem.
This one really resonant with me - growing up in a "It takes a village setting" - this one really rang some bells with me.
will be looking into this writer.
