It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

Each week readers share what they are reading for the week. I've been in a reading drought so I am anxious to learn what's new and what I should add to my tbr for the fall. If you have recommendations, please share them with me at Color Online. I'm building a list.

Currently, I'm reading The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar. I'd really like to know if anyone has read this and The Help and tell me how they feel about the works. Are they comparable? I love the writing and the relationship between the women is complex and troubling for me.

I also discovered that I have a copy of Seeds of Change by Wangari Maathai, a book I wanted but was out of stock. The publisher sent me a copy. Review very soon.

What have you read this week? You can find more WAYR entries at One Person's Journey hosted by Sheila.

I'll be reading Walt Whitman: Song of Himself by Jerome Loving. It's an expansive biography, and though a bit dry at times, I'm loving learning more about one of my favorite poets - including the problematic stuff. It's always good to remember your literary heroes are human.

Hi Susan!

I am currently reading WHEN THE STARS GO BLUE by Caridad Ferrar. So far, it's pretty good. Can't wait to finish!

I haven't read The Space Between Us yet though it is on my shelves. I heard that this isn't Umigar's best but it's supposed to be a good read. How's the writing so far? How far along are you in the book?

Hi Vasilly, I'm more than half way through. I am enjoying her writing. This is my first read by her. She interweaves past and present flawlessly. What's more troubling is the predictability of the conflicts and the inequality between the women doesn't sit well with me not because I think it's unfair which it is but that is the reality; rather the notion that majority readers are more comfortable reading about this kind of relationship rather than a story where the lesser member shows more anger or a story without the usual emphasis on this kind of relationship. Am I making any sense?

Hi, Susan -

Thanks for stopping by my blog and taking the time to comment today!

I read and absolutely loved The Space Between Us, as did the rest of my book group. I also loved The Help (even more probably). I guess the two do have in common the relationships between servants and the people they work for, but each is has a vastly different setting - one in 60's US and the other in modern India. Interestingly, one of the women in my book group is originally from a middle-class family in India, and she said the novel was very close to the way things were when she grew up....and even the way things still are when she goes back to visit, though of course, her perspective is totally different now that she lives in the US.

Hope you enjoy this wonderful book.

Sue

I haven't read The Help yet, but it sounds like an interesting project to compare the two, so knocking it off my TBR pile today!

Hey Susan,

The Space Between Us is very popular with book clubs.

I loved all the information the author gave in Seeds of Change.
