Meme- My favorite Genre(s)

Read this meme today at Wendi's Book Corner: Do you have a specialized blog where you only review a certain genre or type of book? If so, what is your favorite thing about that type of book? If not, what is/are your favorite genre(s)? What makes that genre(s) a favorite?

I read mostly womens literature, YA fiction(sub-genre realistic), multicultural literature and a fair amount of poetry. I read across genres but the above best covers the majority of what I read. Actually, women of color which connotes a variety of genres and issues, best describes my reading habits. I have two blogs. Black-Eyed Susan's is my personal space. It is broader in scope covering anything I lay my eyes on. Color Online was created to support a lit group I run, and is focused on women of color. Our aim is to inform both members and visitors about writers they might not otherwise know. We hope our blog helps readers diversify their reading habits.

Well-written and heartfelt response! You've got me thinking about some of the fiction I read in college when I took specific literature classes (and I didn't go for the "classics"). Thanks for the reminder; I'm going to check out your other blog, too.

Welcome - I'm glad you followed Lenore over! :)

What a wonderful post, and very thoughtful - thanks for sharing!

Yikes! I wanted to let you know that the poll wasn't working on my original post, so I deleted it and redid it - it IS working now! :) Wendi

What, no distracting cat pictures? ;)

I love women's lit too. I noticed I used to read a lot more fiction written by men, so I really had to make an effort to seek out books by women. It's sort of the opposite in the YA genre though...

You write beautifully! The real-life book club that I belong to reads only women's literature. Next month we will be reading Their Eyes Were Watching God which I have read previously but will not mind reading again at all. I think you are right about YA lit - I love it, sometimes I feel they are written with a more succinct plot and character development than some adult novels.
Thanks for joining our fun.

What a great post Susan. I think I read pretty widely across genres, but I'll still have to think about why I prefer the ones I do. I can't say I've read a lot of African American lit in the past, but after this month I'll definitely be reading more. Which is part of why I appreciate your blog so much! :)

Well thought out write, Susan. I hope that's your name. It would appear strange were I to address you as "Black-Eyed Susan. Which, by the way, happens to be one of my favorite garden varieties.

I support other artists; the color of their skin matters not. I was never one to see color, I see only humankind. What you do in supporting woman of color, though, is commendable.

I'll have to connect you with a recently published poet friend of mine. She pens awesome works.

Thank you all for commenting. Donna, I hope it isn't too odd addressing me by a pseudonym. I joined online communities more than a decade ago and pseudonyms was the norm. It's a habit I haven't shaken. Black-Eyed Susan's is the name of a collection of short stories by African American women writers. I choose pen names that have meaning for me. While you don't see color, I wish you would embrace me as a black woman because my culture informs who I am and how I see the world. Would you ever tell someone you don't see their gender?

What a wonderful response! I love how your wrote it and you made a wonderful case for the genres that you prefer! I read both to "know" myself and to "know" others -- I think reading is so powerful and has the ability more than any other art form to really take someone inside another world/another mind/another place/another experience.

Great post! Thanks for stopping by my blog. It was much appreciated!
